The unique French e-Commerce space: different approaches for different types of product
The French eCommerce Federation (FEVAD) has just released its 2020 ranking of eCommerce websites in France.
It is not a surprise to see Amazon far ahead. It is a surprise, however, to see that FNAC is now ahead of CDiscount and Veepee (formerly Vente-Privee.com), after a long time of trying to catch them up.
It’s also worth noting that 70% of the total are French brands.
Chinese eCommerce platform AliExpress at number 10 has well and truly entered the market, and this is probably only the beginning.
But for now, although online retail in France is dominated by Amazon, the platform has strong local competitors like in no other country.
Different platforms for different products
The question of which platforms get which traffic becomes very interesting when you look at the categories. While Amazon dominates almost every category, the runners-up show their particular strengths.
In clothing — the biggest online market in France, and growing — Amazon is the big leader, but Veepee and Vinted, a Lithuanian company, are very close behind.
